António Maio dominated the ESC Online Baja TT Montes Alentejanos in a categorical way, the opening round of the National Off-Road Championship 2024 that took place this weekend in Beja. The National Off-Road Champion won the prologue, was the fastest in the initial stage, and was comfortably in the lead when a slight fall very close to the finish line prevented his victory.
At the helm of a Yamaha, the GNR major started by being the fastest in the prologue, leaving the 2nd place competitor significantly behind by 11s. He was again the fastest in Special Stage 1, which took place in harsh weather conditions. He started Special Stage 2 very motivated and with the goal of managing the superiority he had over his opponents, but luck was not on his side.
“After leading comfortably for 90% of the race, a small fall towards the end caused me to lose a lot of time until I could get back into the race as my bike got stuck in a fence. Not only that, and still in the lead, the bike stopped in a stream 500 meters from the finish line and only with a lot of luck was I able to cross the finish line. Despite everything, we achieved a second place and showed a good race pace,” said António Maio upon arriving in Beja at the end of the final stage.
António Maio is now preparing to participate in the Raid Paraíso TT Góis, the second round of the National Off-Road Championship 2024, which takes place between March 28 and 30.
