Marc Márquez was the top man for Gresini Racing at the Qatar GP, the opening round of the MotoGP world championship, earning him praise from Álex, who sees #93 as his number 1 rival. When asked about the championship and a possible title bid, the youngest of the clan mentioned that Marc doesn’t solely depend on himself, showing a calmer attitude than usual.
Álex started by talking about the high level of the (many) Ducatis on the track, with them being the benchmark, not hesitating to say that he is very attentive to what Marc does: ‘Well, we always look at our teammate. Well, if we have eight bikes, seven in this case, that are very similar to ours, we look to see where the others are, where we are, where we struggle more, where we struggle less. That’s what it’s all about: always being the top bike. And I think the fact that Ducati has eight bikes on the grid makes the riders raise their level, because there is a lot of competition among us’.
Your brother was also an attentive spectator in Losail, where he praised his teammate: ‘I was surprised, but I think he is making overtakes as they should be done. He has been solid and is doing things right. He’s not doing anything exceptional, but he’s doing the right things for a first race with a Ducati’.
Regarding a possible title challenge, and with Marc admitting that he had a more cautious strategy on a circuit that is usually tough for him, Álex mentioned that the former world champion knows he can’t stay on the defensive for much longer:
– He knows he doesn’t have everything in hand to make such a bet. And it’s a circuit where he knows he has to score points. So, the experience of all these years makes us know how to control and manage, especially throughout a year. And even more in 21 races, when everything happens and everything changes. So, the one who stays longer, the one who knows how to be patient, is the one who will have the best chances at the end of the year.
