The MotoGP Indonesia GP training session is over, with Aleix Espargaró setting a new lap record in Mandalika: 1m30.474s. This way, he was one of the top ten riders to secure a spot in tomorrow’s second qualifying phase, along with Miguel Oliveira who finished seventh.
In the early flying laps, Fabio Di Giannantonio (Gresini Racing/Ducati) set the pace, with Jorge Martín (Prima Pramac/Ducati) in second. Lap times were already faster than in the first free practice session, with Di Giannantonio leading the way in the initial minutes.
Aleix Espargaró (Aprilia) moved up to second and then took the lead. With ten minutes gone, Miguel Oliveira (CryptoDATA RNF MotoGP Team/Aprilia) was in third and Fabio Quartararo (Monster Energy Yamaha) in fourth. Marc Márquez and Joan Mir (Repsol Honda), as well as Jack Miller (Red Bull KTM), were also showing good pace and were among the top five at times.
Change of leader with 48 minutes to go, with Viñales moving ahead of Aleix Espargaró, only for positions to reverse moments later. With Martín already in third, the top of the table remained unchanged for several minutes.
There were 13 minutes left until the checkered flag when Aleix Espargaró reinforced his lead, approaching the 1m30s mark… before crashing in turn ten. Viñales took advantage, passing his teammate, as did Marco Bezzecchi (Mooney VR46 Racing Team/Ducati) shortly after. The Italian even set a new lap record.
In the usual last-minute attacks on the clock, the first significant improvement came from Brad Binder (Red Bull KTM), who finished second. Aleix Espargaró then became the new leader, beating Bezzzecchi by 0.170s.
There were no more significant changes until the end. Binder was third, Viñales finished fourth, and Martín fifth. Marc Márquez, Oliveira, Di Giannantonio, Miller, and Quartararo also secured direct spots in Q2, unlike championship leader Francesco Bagnaia (Ducati), who finished 16th. The Italian was improving on his final lap but made a mistake at the end.
