A Brand-New Yamaha OW-01… Still in the Crate — And It’s Going to Auction

Some bikes are rare. Some are iconic. And then there’s this: a completely pristine Yamaha OW-01 with just 1.1 kilometers on the odometer — still sealed in its original shipping crate. For true speed enthusiasts with a taste for high-end collectibles, this could very well be the Holy Grail.

The Pinnacle of 1980s Homologation Specials

The OW-01 — more technically, the Yamaha FZR750R — was built with one goal: to take on the legendary Honda RC30 in the newly launched World Superbike Championship. Only 500 units were ever made. This Yamaha represented the best of what a street-legal, race-ready motorcycle could be — and today, it stands as an untouched cult classic.

Although it was sold through Yamaha dealerships and approved for road use, the OW-01 was clearly built for the track. It featured a race-derived engine from the YZF750, top-tier adjustable suspension, and bodywork that screamed “competition” from every angle.

Condition: Museum-Worthy (Literally)

The example heading to auction via Iconic Motorbikes is in such original condition, it feels like it’s been time-warped straight from 1989. It has never been registered, never ridden beyond factory testing, and has been stored in a climate-controlled private museum in Canada since 2013. Originally purchased at Moto 2001 in Quebec, it has never touched open road.

The auction house emphasizes that this motorcycle is being sold as a display piece. It has not undergone a mechanical inspection. So, if you’re hoping to hear that legendary engine roar, be prepared for some revival work — new tires, fresh fluids, proper tuning, and likely a new set of spark plugs.

A Toy for Well-Funded Enthusiasts

Let’s talk numbers. If you’re thinking of adding this rarity to your collection, expect the final bid to land around $80,000 (roughly €75,000). That’s nearly the cost of two brand-new top-tier superbikes — or a fully kitted Ténéré World Raid with enough fuel to circle the globe.

And no, it won’t fit in your carry-on. You’ll need to pick it up in California — preferably with a very well-padded van.

A One-of-a-Kind Opportunity

The Yamaha OW-01 isn’t just a motorcycle. It’s a time capsule from a golden age of racing, when manufacturers built road bikes purely to meet homologation rules. Its rarity, pristine condition, and historical value make this auction a standout — even for the most seasoned collectors.

If your heart races at the word “homologation,” this is one of those chances that may never come around again.
