Jeffrey Herlings secured his first victory of the MXGP motocross World Championship season this Sunday. The rider, who was a two-time champion in the premier class, was the strongest and most consistent in Kegums.
In the first race, Jorge Prado (Red Bull GasGas) took the holeshot, but Herlings (Red Bull KTM) quickly moved into the lead on the first lap and never looked back. Tim Gajser (Team HRC) climbed to second and was always the main pursuer of the Dutchman, but finished 14.806s behind.
Glenn Coldenhoff (Fantic Factory Racing) beat his teammate Brian Bogers in the battle for third place, with Kevin Horgmo (Team Ship to Cycle Honda) in fifth. A mistake on the third lap dropped Prado to eighth place, but he managed to recover to seventh near the end.
The second race had a very different outcome. Prado took the holeshot and this time he led from start to finish. Gajser always held second place, with Herlings in third. The three got closer in the final laps, but nothing could take the first place from Prado – who crossed the finish line 1.665s ahead of Gasjer.
Herlings finished third, while Coldenhoff was fourth, 51.510s behind the race winner. Bogers completed the top five ahead of Jeremy Seewer (Kawasaki).
In the overall classification of the Latvian MXGP, Herlings was the winner with 45 points, one more than Gajser. Prado closed the podium with 39 points, one more than Coldenhoff who finished fourth. After this round, Gajser moved to the top of the championship with four more points than Prado.
