Joan Mir abandoned the main race of the Italian MotoGP Grand Prix due to a crash. It is the third time this year that the Repsol Honda rider has had this outcome, in a race where he was not able to make progress in the standings.
The 2020 champion revealed his frustrations during yesterday’s race at Mugello: ‘I was angry during the race, because I overtook Polyccio [Espargaró] three times at turn 12 and he passed me back on the straight three times. And he wouldn’t let me get into the middle of the pack, that was frustrating!‘.
Faced with no gains from overtaking attempts at turn 12, Mir changed his strategy, but ended up crashing to further increase the frustration:
– Then I was braking behind him, because if I overtook him at 12, then he would regain the position on the straight, so I said: ‘I’ll try to stay close behind at turn 1, then I can try from 2 to 3, or from 3 to 4.’ And by staying behind him and releasing the brakes, I lost the front. That was quite frustrating. That was a bit the weekend.
