Francesco Bagnaia suffered a setback in the Italian MotoGP Grand Prix. The pole position will escape the Ducati rider even though he was the fastest in qualifying, as he was penalized three positions on the starting grid for the main race at Mugello.
During this afternoon’s practice, the Italian was involved in an incident with Álex Márquez (Gresini/Ducati), where he was riding slower on the racing line in turn 12. The Spaniard, who was following behind, ended up being disturbed, losing a fast lap he was completing.
The stewards considered Bagnaia’s actions to be irresponsible riding and contrary to regulations, deciding to sanction him with three positions on the starting grid for the main race of the Italian Grand Prix. There is no impact on the Sprint race, so the qualifying result will always prevail there.
At the end of the day, the 2022 and 2023 champion claimed that he braked later and swerved, without hindering Márquez. However, after analyzing the evidence, the stewards reached a different conclusion. Nevertheless, Ducati and their rider have the right to appeal if they choose to do so.
