Jorge Martín reinforced his lead in the MotoGP World Championship at the Catalan MotoGP, but still didn’t achieve a victory in Barcelona. After finishing fourth in yesterday’s Sprint race, the Pramac rider finished second in the main race on Sunday behind Francesco Bagnaia (Ducati).
For the current championship leader, the progress shown compared to yesterday was the main reason for satisfaction: ‘I am very happy with today. The thing I am most happy about is that yesterday my real position was seventh, and today we are here in second. This means we are definitely on the right path. We are fast every Sunday, so this is important to me‘.
In a press conference, Martín then summarized the race for himself: ‘I didn’t have the best start, but I had the best strategy in the first corner, on the outside. In the first lap I was already third, then I was able to overtake Pedro [Acosta] and also Pecco in turn ten, but maybe when I had Pedro behind me I wanted to stay in first, so maybe I attacked a little too much. Even if I was saving the tire, it wasn’t enough as we could see‘.
Regarding the battle with Bagnaia, the Spanish rider commented that, in responding to the overtake, he ended up compromising the tire: ‘When Pecco caught me, I tried to stay relaxed, because I think I was riding well, with a good pace. As soon as he overtook me, I tried to follow him, but I destroyed the rear tire‘.
Finally, Martín stated: ‘In general we need to improve our weak points, today I was able to see where they are. I feel like we are on the right track, but we still lacked something here in Montmeló‘.
