Jorge Martín finished the first day of the Catalunya GP in 6th position overall. The Spanish rider remains very consistent and, despite only finishing in sixth place, he was just 0.231 milliseconds behind the first-placed rider, Aleix Espargaró.
In the debrief, Martín talked about the sensations of the first day of training at the Montmeló circuit.
– It was a good day, I knew we had a lot of work ahead of us. We tried a new setup, some different things that we don’t normally do, but on this track it had to be done, because we had to close the gap to the Aprilia. I think it worked out very well, so it was worth trying to change. I couldn’t push too hard on the flying lap, I decided to go with the changes but I was missing something. I think we suffer more from lack of grip than the KTM or Aprilia, we have to try to find the ideal balance for the bike.
Asked about the differences in speed on circuits year after year and whether it causes more strain on the riders, Martín replied: ‘The faster we go, the more physical it becomes, because we brake later and have to exert more force to stop in a shorter space, but physically I don’t think it will be a problem during the races. I am physically prepared, at least I have been training well and I am prepared.’
