The document approved at the European Parliament’s plenary session could contribute to the survival of the internal combustion engine in the face of the deadlines imposed on the automotive sector by the “Fit for 55” package.
In the text, which concerns heavy transport, an amendment is approved that establishes the definition of “CO2-neutral fuels”. This definition, according to MP Massimiliano Salini, who tabled the amendment, is a truly historic step towards introducing biofuels promoted by Italy into the EU’s complex legislative mechanisms, which – potentially and according to the MP, who speaks of an “excellent result” – could save the internal combustion engine.
As Salini himself points out, this is a regulatory precedent that could have an effect on the entire automotive sector, since it is part of a “legislative dossier drawn up by the plenary assembly of the European Parliament”. Everything will therefore also take place in the following games, including the Trialogue (the informal body that tries to get the representatives of the European Parliament, the Council of the European Union and the European Commission to reach a provisional agreement on a legislative proposal). However, at the same session, the amendment on the carbon correction factor, which would have taken into account the contribution of “carbon-neutral fuels” in future regulations, was rejected, as it was considered by the European Commissioner for Climate Action, Wopke Hoekstra, to be inappropriate for the Commission’s objectives.
