Michele Pirro, Ducati’s test rider, closely followed Marc Marquez’s first experience on the Ducati Desmosedici during the off-season test in Valencia. Despite a confidentiality obligation on his ongoing contract with Honda, Marquez spoke highly of his new mount, expressing satisfaction with the Ducati.
Pirro, who also assists Ducati riders on the Grand Prix field, was present at Valencia to observe Marquez’s transition to Ducati. He expressed pride in Ducati’s work over the years, particularly in making the bike versatile for all riders, and noted Marquez’s choice of Ducati as a positive sign.
Reflecting on Ducati’s journey, Pirro mentioned that in 2016, Marquez couldn’t join Ducati due to cost, but now he has chosen Ducati to win again. This shift, according to Pirro, is a testament to Ducati’s progress, as they have moved from emulating Japanese manufacturers to leading in innovation.
Regarding Marquez’s feedback on the Ducati, Pirro noted that Marquez had positive feelings about the bike. He wasn’t surprised by Marquez’s quick adaptation, given his status as an eight-time world champion and his proven speed even in difficult years with Honda. Pirro mentioned that Marquez didn’t say much, but his actions, such as completing around fifty laps without taking significant risks, spoke volumes.
Pirro also sought Marquez’s input on potential improvements for the Ducati, but so far, Marquez hasn’t suggested many changes, leaving the feedback sheet relatively blank.
‘He didn’t say much, but with what we saw, like his face or the fact that he did around fifty laps without taking any big risks, I think those are the best answers . As a Ducati rider and test rider, I have to convey information and sensations to the technicians, and I took care to ask him what things could be improved and so far this sheet has remained quite blank’, Pirro said to GPOne.com.
Looking ahead to 2024, Pirro anticipates that Ducati will continue to be competitive, as evidenced by different riders winning on different versions of the bike. He believes that the difference with the 2024 bike won’t be exaggerated and that the rider’s sensations and “feel” will make the difference. Pirro expects Marquez, like Di Giannantonio, to be among the key contenders in the upcoming season.
