McLaren has started its adventure in e-bikes, or “electric hyperbikes,” with a range of four limited edition bicycles consisting of the Extreme 600W, Extreme 250W, Sport 600W, and Sport 250W. And as McLaren is McLaren, the models are as performance-oriented as you would expect. They were even designed by the same teams responsible for the brand’s cars.
The Sport range is a versatile hardtail e-mountain bike designed for off-road and single-track trails, with the SRAM GX Eagle 12-speed mechanical transmission. The Extreme model, on the other hand, is a full-suspension electric mountain bike designed for maximum off-road performance and uses the SRAM XX Eagle 12-speed wireless transmission.
The color LCD screens mimic those found in the manufacturer’s cars and display telemetry information, including speed, battery duration, and range.
Creating the most powerful street-legal electric bike sounds like a really cool achievement, until you realize that, in order to be road-legal, the bike has to be limited to 32 km/h. So, what’s the point of all that power if it runs out at 32 km/h? Since these bikes are meant for off-road trails, the unlimited torque at your command is what makes these models so special.
The Extreme 600W and Sport 600W deliver an impressive 159 Nm of torque, more than a KTM 1390 SuperDuke R. Of course, you’ll need to control all this power, so don’t accidentally do a burnout on your way to work…
