From 2027, MotoGP has new rules where the front fairing will be reduced by 50 millimeters, as well as new 850cc engines. Bikes will no longer be allowed to use holeshot devices and height adjustment systems.
Jack Miller generally agrees with the rules, but believes that aerodynamic limitations will not make a significant difference: ‘I mean, [reducing] 50mm on aero is kind of small I think. Seeing what they’ve been able to do, obviously myself seeing the original winglets and having the original winglets [at Ducati], and then what we’ve been able to do from then on, I mean, 50mm ain’t going to change that much in that department’.
The Red Bull KTM rider does agree, however, with the removal of the devices and with the new engines – arguing that it is necessary to reduce the speed of the bikes: ‘It’s cool to see devices are gone. I think that will be a good change. [The] 850cc [engines], also a good change. All these beautiful racetracks we go to, are slowly but surely getting too small. Fans are getting further and further away from the action simply because these bikes are absolute ballistic missiles and the tracks are getting too small for fast bikes. So I think a change is going to be good. I think there’ll be some interesting ideas coming out of this. And obviously looking back to the original 800c, there were some pretty cool motorcycles. So I’m pretty sure there’ll be some noise changes, some power changes’.
Overall, Miller believes that the new rules will be a benefit: ‘I think it will be good for the sport. Change is good. And like I say, good to see the devices go. I think that will help. And I’d really like to see aero gone’.
