MotoGP currently has five manufacturers, after Suzuki left at the end of 2022. In 2027, new regulations will be in place and there are rumors about the possibility of more manufacturers entering – particularly BMW.
Without naming names, Dorna’s CEO, Carmelo Ezpeleta, confirmed at a press conference that there have been approaches: ‘We have been approached by different manufacturers, but it is obvious that everyone was waiting to know how the technical regulations will be in the future to decide anything‘.
The Spaniard then said: ‘We are extremely happy now with the five manufacturers involved in MotoGP. It is an incredible collaboration in the way we talk with all of them and they have helped us create the new rules – it was important. But obviously, yes. There have been several manufacturers who have shown interest in being part of the championship in the future. It is obvious that there is confidentiality between us and them‘.
Carmelo Ezpeleta mentioned that now that the regulations have been presented, we have to wait for developments: ‘After today’s presentation of the rules, we are waiting to see how this will develop. But the success of MotoGP so far and everyone waiting for the new rules is generating interest from all other manufacturers to know exactly how the technical rules will be from 2027 onwards‘.
Despite approaches from other constructors, Dorna’s sports director, Carlos Ezpeleta, clarified that they were not directly involved in the drafting of the rules: ‘The reality is that we did not. We try to make the sport as good as possible with our current constructors. We assume that this will attract new constructors or maybe attract new constructors in the future because they make sense and because it will make MotoGP better – there were no specific conversations that we have ever had with other constructors affected or were involved in discussions for the 2027 regulations‘.
