At the age of 27, Matteo Ferrari made his debut in the Moto2 World Championship by competing in the Spanish GP last weekend. The rider was a wildcard for Gresini in Jerez, the team with which he has been competing in MotoE since 2019 and was champion that year.
After three very modest seasons in Moto3, the Italian ended up making a career in MotoE, as well as competing in the Italian championship (CIV). Now, he has made his debut in Moto2.
And, although it wasn’t a widely discussed topic when there were other protagonists, Ferrari did well: he finished 15th and, in this way, scored points before six of the regular riders – in addition to already having as many points as Darryn Binder (Liqui Moly Husqvarna Intact GP/Kalex) who is another rider in the field.
The result in Jerez was in line with the goals of the MotoE champion: ‘Clearly our goal was to be in the points zone, after avoiding a crash and some accidents we ended up in 15th, I am very happy with that,’ he said as quoted by Corse di Moto.
Ferrari saw this participation as a benefit for MotoE: ‘Knowing our pace in practice, we could have fought for ninth or tenth place, definitely a great result as a wildcard. But we take this experience home, it will also serve us for the future, for MotoE. It was a good practice, I want to thank the whole team, Nadia [Padovani], Luca [Gresini] and everyone for this opportunity in the World Championship. We take this point home and we will arrive motivated in Le Mans’.
