Joe Roberts still doesn’t have any victories in the 2024 Moto2 season, but after four rounds and three consecutive second places, he is the championship leader.
The rider from the OnlyFans American Racing Team has 69 points, five more than Sergio García (MT Helmets-MSi/Boscoscuro) – who lost the lead after finishing fourth in the Spanish GP.
This is a historic moment for Roberts. He is the first American rider to lead a world championship since Nicky Hayden – who became MotoGP champion in 2006.
In recent weeks, the current Moto2 rider has been linked to a move to the premier class soon – which could happen as early as 2025, through Trackhouse Racing, the only American team in the paddock that openly aims to have a rider from their country in the future.
However, for now they have Miguel Oliveira and Raúl Fernández. Although both are nearing the end of their contracts, they are in an upward phase and showing improvement, as confirmed in the past Sunday’s Spanish GP: Oliveira finished eighth and was the best Aprilia rider, while Fernández finished 11th, not far from Maverick Viñales (Aprilia).
