Fermín Aldeguer is really at home and today at the Spanish GP he won the Moto2 race, a very special day for Joe Roberts who is the new championship leader, thus becoming the first American to lead the championship since Nicky Hayden.
Manuel González was the author of the best start and immediately moved to the front but briefly lost the lead to Fermín Aldeguer, before returning to the front of the race. Sergio García was third, Jake Dixon fourth, and Albert Arenas fifth.
Senna Agius was the first to retire from the race after a touch from Barry Baltus, and shortly after it was Bo Bendsneyder’s turn to also go down, in turn 13.
And the crashes continued, now with Xavier Artigas also going down.
If at the front the race continued at a good pace and with Aldeguer pressuring and even taking the lead, the truth is that González once again returned the maneuver to #54, who will be in MotoGP in 2025, and returned to the lead in the race.
This race continued to be rich in falls, with Dennis Foggia also falling, and later joined by Darryn Binder. The front duo was at a higher level and fighting hard, with the Beta Tools SpeedUp rider returning to the lead in the race, and now at least for now, preventing González from immediately returning (almost) the maneuver. Quickly Aldeguer began to try to escape and was succeeding: with 11 laps completed he now had a 0.751s advantage over González, García remained in third place, Joe Roberts was fourth and Arenas fifth. Dixon, meanwhile, was another rider to fall, again at turn 13. This was the top ten, with the race practically halfway through:The disaster continued for Italtrans, now facing yet another fall, that of Diogo Moreira in the same turn 13, which continued to add “victims”.
Roberts was on the attack and passed García, thus temporarily taking the lead in the championship, with one more point than #3. In front was Aldeguer, with a 1s advantage over González, precisely 1.045s.
Alex Escrig fell and guess where? Precisely: in turn 13, with his bike taking on a “life of its own” and almost causing damage:
Aldeguer was in great form and gaining more time over González, with Roberts in third and increasingly certain that he would finish the day as the Moto2 championship leader, winking at Trackhouse Racing.
And Roberts’ life continued to improve! The American was on the attack and moved into second after passing González. Just as he did with Aldeguer, González immediately tried to respond but the OnlyFans American Racing Team rider successfully defended his position and held onto the vice-leadership in the race.
The race was coming to an end and only a disaster would prevent Aldeguer from winning, but before that happened, Jaume Masiá also crashed, right at the end.
It ended with a new winner this year, with Aldeguer taking the victory in Jerez!
