Throughout the Sprint race of the MotoGP Spanish GP, Marc Márquez showed his usual determination and aggressiveness, even after a fall while leading. A more extreme dispute with Joan Mir (Repsol Honda) earned him a penalty, but he also had incidents with Brad Binder (Red Bull KTM) and Miguel Oliveira (Trackhouse Racing/Aprilia).
Asked about the situations he was involved in during the race, the Gresini Spaniard replied: ‘Contact with Mir. Almost [with Oliveira], but there was no contact. It’s different. With Mir it was exactly the same situation as with Binder. Binder overtook me, then I saw him and lifted the bike. I tried to overtake Mir smoothly, but then he stopped braking and came in, and then we had contact. It was my fault’.
Márquez then said: ‘Sometimes you need to understand. For example, with Binder I managed to get in and had contact. But then I know I will not only lose to Binder, but also more positions. So sometimes you need to analyze‘.
Returning to the incident with Mir, the eight-time world champion admitted that the penalty was fair: ‘In that case, Mir tried to insist and I didn’t brake enough to overtake him completely. I was penalized one place, but it was a good penalty for the stewards, but it was easy to give back a position to Oliveira and recover‘.
