Marc Márquez caused a real stir in 2023 by announcing that he would leave Honda and ultimately decided to continue his career with Gresini Racing, the team where his brother is also. The reason, he recalled, was related to the lack of competitiveness, and thinking about his future and his mental health.
The Spaniard recalled the decision made in words to TNT Sports, quoted in Motosan, and how he had to ignore part of what he felt: ‘It was a very difficult decision. I didn’t listen to my heart. I only thought about what was best for my future and what I thought was that I still wanted to be a MotoGP rider for many years’.
After more than 10 years with the structure, it was time to take another path, and that was not easy at all: ‘The Repsol Honda team was my life, my career. It was very difficult to leave my mechanics, my technicians, and the sponsors, but I told them: if I do one more year here, I will end my career because my mental health would be at risk’.
Márquez has a contract until the end of 2024, and will therefore be able to see what options are on the table for his future at the end of the season.
