Liberty Media acquired Formula 1 in 2017 and since then has expanded its presence in the United States to three Grand Prix events. It is a market where significant growth is sought, and now that it is going to acquire MotoGP, there is also a lot of potential to be explored in that territory.
Currently, the Grand Prix of the Americas is the only one on the premier class motorcycle racing calendar – unlike a few years ago, when there were also rounds in Laguna Seca and Indianapolis. Could the same happen in the future?
Greg Maffei, CEO of Liberty Media, told CNBC that there are no guarantees that this will happen: ‘For starters, MotoGP currently only has one race in the United States, the same situation that Formula 1 had when we acquired it‘, he recalled.
The American leader emphasized that there are opportunities to explore not only in the US: ‘I can’t say for sure that we will have three, but it is certain that there are also many opportunities geographically in the rest of the world. At the moment, there are only 12 in Europe, we will try to evaluate all these opportunities without further increasing the number of races‘.
The MotoGP calendar has 21 rounds in 2024 – it would be 22, the maximum considered possible at the moment, without the cancellation of the Argentine Grand Prix. However, there is still interest from other countries in joining an already very congested schedule.
