When Liberty Media acquired Formula 1 in 2017, radical changes were introduced to the championship at various levels: management, format, budget cap, new rules, fan interaction and engagement, use of social media and digital platforms, among other aspects.
The American company is now set to acquire MotoGP and believes that not as many changes will be necessary as in F1 – although they still see some potential to explore with Dorna.
Greg Maffei, CEO of Liberty Media, stated at an investors conference that he finds MotoGP to be more advanced than F1 was in 2017:
– I’m not going to criticize where F1 was, but I think MotoGP is much more advanced honestly, in some cases maybe having seen what’s going on in F1 and already embracing much of it. […]. In some ways, I think it’s much more advanced, but I think there’s still opportunity to see the benefit of those changes and the benefit of the improvements they have made over the past few years.
The American executive also said: ‘I like to think that there are some improvements we can make together over the next few years, we will continue to guide that and show opportunities. So, I don’t think there is as much change coming as there was in F1, but I still think there are many of the advantages that F1 had‘.
