With the acquisition of MotoGP, Liberty Media will become the owner of the two main motorcycle and automobile championships – as it has owned Formula 1 since 2017.
For now, everything depends on the scrutiny of competition regulators, but Liberty Media’s goal is to apply some of the learnings from F1 to also enhance the growth of MotoGP.
However, the CEO of the American company, Greg Maffei, assured that the two championships will not be negotiated together. The executive stated in an investor conference:
– One thing we will not do is negotiate MotoGP and Formula 1 together, either because of regulatory issues or because of the structure of our agreement with F1 and the teams.
It is worth noting that in 2006, CVC Capital Partners, then owner of MotoGP, had to give up the championship in order to complete the purchase of F1, due to restrictions related to preventing anti-competitive practices.
