KTM did not hesitate to promote Pedro Acosta to MotoGP in 2024, after only three seasons in the world championships: one in Moto3 and two in Moto2. The rider was placed in the Red Bull GasGas Tech3 satellite team, where it only took him two rounds to achieve his first podium. However, Marco Melandri believes he should have stayed in the Red Bull KTM team… instead of Jack Miller.
The former rider said on Instagram, quoted by the Motosan.es website: ‘Regarding Acosta, there is little to say. He started from the back and climbed to the podium. In Portimão, he was able to ride more freely and it was scary. Now his opponents know how formidable he is‘.
Melandri is of the opinion that Acosta is already the best KTM rider, admitting that he does not understand why he was not placed directly in the official team: ‘He is already the best KTM rider, but I believe he can truly win next year when Red Bull puts him in the official team. What I don’t understand is why they didn’t do it immediately, because at this point it’s clear that Jack Miller is not up to par. He wasn’t with Ducati either. He is a very strong rider, but too inconsistent‘.
