First GP of the year and a scene similar to what was seen so many times in 2023, with Jorge Martín securing pole position for the Qatar GP.
Here is the first MotoGP Q2 of 2024 and the question: who will conquer the first pole position of the season?
After the first laps, Martín was the fastest with a time of 1:50.789s, with a 0.230s lead over Fabio Di Gianntonio, and Francesco Bagnaia 0.324s behind. Marc Márquez was fourth, Enea Bastianini fifth, and Jack Miller closed the first two rows of the grid for now.
Seven minutes remained until the end of the session and in the garage, most of the riders were making final preparations for the all-or-nothing attempt for pole position in Losail.
With five minutes left in the session, Ducati had the top five fastest times but… would it stay that way?
Upon returning, with approximately four minutes remaining in the Q2 session, Di Gia was already setting red sector times, just like Bagnaia, but while Di Gia lost pace, the same could not be said for Bagnaia who improved and reached second place, still behind Martín by 0.139s, after making a mistake by going wide in the last corner.
Aleix Espargaró challenged the Ducatis and reached second place, trailing Martín by 0.083s, and shortly after, Binder was 0.124s behind, securing the third fastest time.
Raúl Fernández crashed and was out of the fight for pole position, while in the final seconds the suspense increased with… more Martín! The Pramac Racing rider was setting red sector times and had anticipated an improvement in his time. Before that, Binder also crashed.
Martín would end up not being able to improve his time but the session ended with #89 once again securing the pole position. A. Espargaró was second and Enea Bastianini third.
