The race direction of the MotoGP Australian Grand Prix was praised by the majority of the paddock for canceling the sprint race due to strong gusts of wind. Maverick Viñales, Aprilia rider, was more cautious in his analysis, considering safety a priority… although he requested at least one reconnaissance lap.
The Spaniard believes it is difficult to assess whether the decision was correct: ‘It is very difficult to say whether it was right or not. From my point of view, at least do the reconnaissance lap to see how the track was and then cancel the race if necessary. We had some information from the Moto2 riders, they also said it was impossible, so I don’t know. It’s not in our hands‘.
Questioned if the cancellation was disappointing, Viñales replied: ‘I don’t know if it’s disappointing or not, because ultimately I think safety has to be the main concern. But it’s always a difficult situation for the race direction. I imagine that after showing the red flag in Moto2, it didn’t make sense to let us go with the same conditions, I believe‘.
