Taiyo Furusato was the fastest in the second practice session of the Malaysian Moto3 Grand Prix. However, the rider was unable to beat the best times from the opening session in Sepang.
The initial leader was Jaume Masiá (Leopard Racing/Honda), with over half a second advantage over Stefano Nepa (Angeluss MTA Team/KTM). Some riders had their first flying laps cancelled due to yellow flags resulting from the crash of David Muñoz (BOE Motorsports/KTM).While Masiá strengthened his position, Deniz Öncü (Red Bull KTM Ajo) became the second classified before overtaking the rival. Kaito Toba (SIC58 Squadra Corse/Honda) was the third classified at this point, before being overtaken by some rivals. Collin Veijer (Liqui Moly Husqvarna Intact GP) moved up to third place.
Several minutes passed without significant changes in the timing table. The top three were the only ones who had lapped in the 2m13s in these first attacks on the clock.
Leadership changes six minutes before the end, with Daniel Holgado (Red Bull KTM Tech3) surpassing Öncü, shortly before being beaten by Ayumu Sasaki (Liqui Moly Husqvarna Intact GP). The two already lapped in 2m12s. In the following minutes, there were many more changes in the timing table.
Holgado regained the lead, but was then overtaken by Furusato (Honda Team Asia) and Matteo Bertelle (Rivacold Snipers Team/Honda). Until the end, no one surpassed Furusato, who led the session despite finishing with a fall.
Alonso came close, 37 thousandths behind, with Bertelle in third. Holgado and Adrián Fernández (Leopard Racing/Honda) completed the top five. Masiá was seventh and did not improve compared to the first practice, but still his time in that session was the best of the day.
