Jorge Martín is clearly one of the standout riders of the day but not for the best reasons: his 10th place in Saturday’s race in Qatar left the Spaniard 21 points behind Francesco Bagnaia and in his analysis of his performance, the Spaniard admitted that he arrived… laughing.
‘At a certain point, I started laughing because they didn’t beat me on the track, because under the same conditions I am confident that I could have won today. […] I am also frustrated because I believe I deserve this championship as well and I lost it largely today’, Martín told the press at the Qatari circuit.
The pilot was then questioned about whether it is possible to do something to avoid these problems in the future, to which he replied: ‘I believe there is no need to understand what happened because I think they do not want to decide the championship: they want to be competitive, I hope and believe that they want the same conditions for us but… I lost 1.5s of pace in one day. I don’t think I forgot how to drive. I think they need to improve and analyze why this happened so it doesn’t happen again in the future, and I hope I can fight for more championships in the future, but today I feel a bit lost because it’s harder now.’ Facing the 21-point difference that now separates Martín from Bagnaia, the Spanish rider ensured that he will not give up: ‘I think we can still achieve it. We will arrive in Valencia and see if we can be competitive. It’s a track that I really like and where I was very fast in the past. We’ll see, it’s easy to recover points now as we saw today, I lost many, so if I win both races in Valencia I may have a small chance of winning, but now the question is how this tire changed my path to the title because I believe today I could have recovered points.’
