Worn out by the lack of competitiveness, Marc Márquez decided to leave Honda in MotoGP to join Gresini and thus ride a Ducati that could allow him to improve his results in 2024. Monster Energy Yamaha is also going through a difficult period from a sporting point of view and sees this decision as a warning not to lose Fabio Quartararo.
Team director Lin Jarvis told journalist Michel Turco that the situations are similar, although he believes Yamaha is in a better position with its bike: ‘With just two points, we would have been in a terrible position if Fabio had asked to leave before the end of his contract. I hope this is something we can avoid in the future. Anyway, Yamaha and Honda are in similar situations, although I think things are a bit less complicated for us in the sense that our bike is not as unpredictable’.
The British admitted that Marquez leaving Honda is, for Yamaha, a motivating factor in satisfying Quartararo: ‘For us, Marquez’s departure… must have been a big sign, to motivate us even more to satisfy Fabio by giving him the bike he has been waiting for. Of course, it surprised me. An eight-time world champion with his contract leaving Honda in a catastrophic situation, without anyone replacing him… it’s an earthquake‘.
