Matthias Walkner will miss the Dakar 2024 after suffering a serious fall last week while training in the United States of America – which required surgery and two more surgeries that are yet to be performed. The injuries were to the level of a leg.
Pit Beirer, sports director of Red Bull KTM, was on ServusTV, where he talked about Walkner’s accident – revealing some details in addition to emphasizing that he does not want to talk about a career ending:
– It was a shock for us. It was dusty, the sun was low, and he jumped into a very deep hole. He injured his foot, ankle, and ankle joint very badly. He now has to go back home, then we will see with the doctors. I don’t want to talk about the end of his career yet.
This Wednesday, Walkner is expected to return home, followed by a long recovery process that, according to Beirer, involves two more surgeries. At this point, the pilot is already speaking normally and is in good spirits, with the pain improving.
