The adventure scooter segment is growing and many new players have entered the market in recent years. Interestingly, it was Honda that started this sub-segment with the launch of the X-ADV in 2016 and later with smaller versions like the ADV350 and ADV160. That being said, other Japanese manufacturers seem to have stepped away from the segment, as many of the new ADV-style scooters come from European, Chinese, and Taiwanese manufacturers.
Peugeot, for example, recently introduced the XP400 adventure scooter to the global market. Chinese brands have also ventured into the segment recently, with Zontes unveiling their 501 series of maxi-scooters at EICMA 2023. Even electric scooter brands like Gogoro have shown interest in these rugged scooters, with the introduction of the CrossOver.
This time, Taiwanese motorcycle brand SYM wants to enter the mid-displacement adventure scooter segment with the launch of the ADXTG 400. The new scooter doesn’t hide its design inspirations from other adventure scooters and features a robust fairing, dual-purpose tires, long-travel suspension (for a scooter), and even a sturdy protection plate and an up-swept exhaust. To add a special touch to the mix, the ADXTG 400 even has a quite sophisticated aluminum swingarm, a feature that is not very common in scooters.
When it comes to performance, the SYM ADXTG 400 is equipped with a liquid-cooled 399 cc single-cylinder engine with fuel injection, delivering 35 hp and 36.61 Nm of torque. These large scooters with a single cylinder tend to operate surprisingly smoothly, so it’s likely that the same will be true for the ADXTG 400 thanks to a large counterbalance. The scooter’s technological package is also quite premium, including Bosch ABS and traction control, with the option to turn off the rear ABS for off-road driving. There is also full-LED lighting and an emergency braking alert that flashes the lights in case of strong deceleration.
