Álex Márquez made his debut in the World Motorcycle Championships in 2012, when his brother, Marc, was already a rising talent. The following year, #93 arrived in MotoGP, starting to achieve great successes, while Álex went through some difficulties in Moto3 – particularly at the psychological level, comparing himself to his older brother.
In an interview with DAZN, Álex Márquez revealed the difficulties he went through at the beginning of his career: ‘The first two years were a great ordeal. I learned to fall and to suffer. The contrast of having someone at home named Marc Márquez, who wins in MotoGP every year, who won I don’t know how many races in 2014, was there in 2015, won again in 2016‘.
The pilot who competed for Gresini in MotoGP this year acknowledged the mistake and the lesson he learned from comparing himself to another pilot: ‘It makes you doubt yourself or hurts you in some way. Yes, he is your brother, you are happy for his triumphs, but you also want to win. That was the biggest mistake I made at that moment, comparing myself to someone. All pilots who compare themselves to someone end up losing. That’s where I struggled the most psychologically. Having too high expectations is what made me struggle the most, then I learned for the future to have realistic expectations‘.
