For several years, Lommel has hosted the MXGP Motocross World Championship, being considered the epicenter of the sport in Europe due to the proximity of several teams. However, the future may be at risk and even face closure – as has happened with several other tracks in Belgium.
According to the site SPEEDWEEK.com, noise pollution is at the core of the problems at the sand track circuit. The permission to operate may be revoked as early as January 1st. This would jeopardize the presence of the MXGP, with the MXGP of Flanders in Lommel having a contract until the end of 2026.
Faced with the existing risk, the GP organizer, Johan Boonen, assured that the situation is being resolved: ‘The builders are working hard to reduce the noise. So please, give us another year or two and then we can negotiate another situation‘.
