Last year, Jorge Martín was one of the strongest MotoGP riders, and despite being in the Prima Pramac satellite team, he fought for the title until the end with Francesco Bagnaia – who had been champion the previous year. Jorge Lorenzo has no doubts that his compatriot could once again be one of the riders to watch this year.
The former rider told the official MotoGP website that Martín made clear progress in 2023: ‘It is certain that Jorge took a big step forward from 2022 to 2023. He prepared himself much more to be stronger, worked a lot in last year’s pre-season and showed it on track: he was much more consistent, he didn’t have those ups and downs that haunted him in his first two years in MotoGP. He was the runner-up, fought for the title until the last race‘.
Martín ended up not achieving the title, and Lorenzo has a possible explanation… considering that there is something that #89 must correct: ‘I think he couldn’t get it because of the experience and maybe he was too emotional, a bit too confident – especially in the Indonesian GP for example, where he fell while leading with a three-second advantage. So, in some circumstances he still needs to find a way to stay calmer and be cooler, and not be so hot, because a small mistake costs you several points and can make you lose the championship. If he learns to manage the situation, he can be very dangerous for Pecco and the other riders this year‘.
