Ducati is currently the dominant force in the MotoGP World Championship and, in order to level the playing field, it will have restrictions next season. For the same reason, Honda and Yamaha will be granted concessions in order to try to close the gap to their European rivals.
According to the Motorsport.com website, MotoGP sports director Carlos Ezpeleta presented the outline of the measures to the constructors last Friday. Aprilia and KTM are seeking more restrictions on Ducati, but the manufacturer from Borgo Panigale would not be willing to accept such a scenario.
The idea of assigning concessions based on the points scored in the Constructors’ World Championship is on the table – the more points, the greater the limitations. In this scenario, Ducati would have 170 tires available for the season (tests and Grand Prix), compared to the current 200 that everyone has. On the other hand, Honda and Yamaha would have 230 tires.
Although there are no changes regarding the allowed private tests, having fewer tires will inevitably limit the work. And this is where the disagreement lies: Ducati accepts these measures, but Aprilia and KTM want the Italian manufacturer to have only 140 tires per year. Something that has been rejected in Borgo Panigale.
As for wildcards, Ducati would no longer have the possibility to register them, while Honda and Yamaha would have a greater number of wildcards. In terms of engines, those who currently do not have concessions can use seven per rider during a season, but it is not known what the reduced quantity would be in this new system that is intended to be implemented.
