A fall in race 1, followed by a sixth place in the Superpole race and a 12th place in race 2, made Remy Gardner have to face his home race in the first round of WSBK, with the Australian not achieving the desired result by far.
The GYTR GRT Yamaha WorldSBK Team rider analyzed his weekend in a team statement as follows: ‘Well, this weekend wasn’t meant to be. We had some good fights in the sprint race and the pace was there, but unfortunately we couldn’t finish in the top three, despite having great speed’.
As for what happened in race 2, where he was involved with Jonathan Rea who eventually crashed, #87 said his bike was damaged, and despite appearing to be fine, it wasn’t the case: ‘I felt we could make another attempt in Race 2, but I couldn’t avoid Jonathan’s bike and ended up with some damage. The red flag gave us another chance, but I had to start from the back of the grid. I think this is not good, but rules are rules. Although the guys did a fantastic job to get me ready to go again, the bike wasn’t completely good, but we still managed to earn a valuable point’.
And he concluded: ‘It’s a shame we couldn’t convert our race potential, but we have to take the positives from the weekend; the speed was there and we did an excellent job, we’re going to Barcelona for the second round of the season’.
