In early February, Raúl Fernández suffered a serious accident on the first day of MotoGP testing in Sepang. Despite the injuries suffered, including three fractures, the Trackhouse Racing rider recovered enough to be able to ride in the Qatar tests.
The Spaniard, teammate of Miguel Oliveira, revealed to the press that it was a strange fall: ‘For me it was strange, honestly, because I saw Pecco [Bagnaia]. He fell on the first lap, I fell on the third. It’s something that I honestly don’t understand very well. Yes, I understand, but what I don’t understand is that I was slower, I was on the correct trajectory – because on the first two laps, on the first one I was very slow because I saw Pecco; on the second one I went wide and on the third one I did it slower and on the correct trajectory, I felt both tires sliding and I did the highside‘.
Fernández added: ‘It’s very strange, because I didn’t expect it, I didn’t see any parts, I didn’t see oil. It was quite strange. But we saw in the data that the fall was also very strange – it wasn’t simply a highside because of too much acceleration, something like that, or me being aggressive with the throttle. We saw both tires sliding and at that moment I flew‘.
