Many motorcyclists agree that the Yamaha CP4 engine – whether in the YZF-R1 or the MT-10 – is one of the best-sounding motorcycle engines ever. Straight from the factory, the strong sound of the exhaust is already intimidating, but it becomes even more exciting with the addition of a quality aftermarket exhaust system.
Now, depending on where you ride, you’ll want a competition exhaust or a street-legal setup. Fortunately, Yoshimura offers both for the 2023 Yamaha MT-10. Both setups use the Yoshimura AT2 muffler, complete with a carbon fiber cover that adds a sporty touch to the already sporty hyper-naked machine. The Yoshimura AT2 Race Series is a 3/4 exhaust system that eliminates the motorcycle’s catalytic converter. Naturally, this means that this exhaust system is not street-legal, as it no longer complies with emissions and noise regulations, so it should only be used on the track.
For riders who want to keep their bike street-legal, Yoshimura offers the Street Series, which consists of the AT2 muffler and a connecting tube that is mounted to the motorcycle’s stock catalytic converter. This setup is not only quieter than the Race Series, but it also maintains the bike’s emissions compliance and is therefore street-legal.
It is clear that users who want to extract the maximum power from an aftermarket exhaust will want to opt for the ¾ race system. Yoshimura claims that the AT2 system increases power by two percent compared to the original system, while torque increases by 1.7 percent. For a motorcycle that produces over 150 hp, this is certainly impressive. Additionally, the AT2 Race Series weighs half the weight of the original system (4 kg vs 8 kg).
