In 2017, Liberty Media acquired Formula 1 and since then, a new era has begun in the championship. MotoGP could be the next target of the American conglomerate, which would make it the first time in history that the premier categories of both car racing and motorcycle racing are under the same owner.
The Expansión, an economy specialized newspaper, writes that Liberty Media is already negotiating with Bridgepoint for a possible acquisition of Dorna Sports – the promoter of MotoGP, as well as the Superbike World Championship. The value of the company led by Carmelo Ezpeleta is estimated at 4 billion euros and offers below that amount are not accepted.
And Liberty Media is not alone in its interest, although Dorna Sports is not officially for sale: there is allegedly interest from Amazon, Disney, and Netflix, as well as from the capital funds CVC and KKR. At the end of last year, Ezpeleta told La Repubblica newspaper that there were negotiations for a sale, although he did not confirm that it will have to happen. Bridgepoint has been the majority shareholder of Dorna since 2006.
