Although not exactly the most popular in the US market, maxi-scooters are incredibly popular in Europe due to their functionality, adaptability, and affordability.
Maxi-scooters are described as a mix between a touring motorcycle and a scooter. Thanks to strict licensing regulations in Europe, we find small maxi-scooters designed for young beginner riders. These two-wheeled motorcycles, equipped with a 125cc engine and many practical features, are often the first vehicle for young people living in the city. With the growing popularity of maxi-scooters, we are seeing more and more new models entering the market. This is the case with the new E125 from Chinese manufacturer Zontes.
We have talked about Zontes several times, and of all the Chinese manufacturers aiming for global success, Zontes is one of the few that seems to be doing things right. The new E125 is their entry-level offering in the maxi-scooter segment and shares the same platform as its larger sister, the E350. Zontes says that the E125 aims to provide riders with maximum comfort on both short and long trips. The company claims that the style of the E125 intends to convey the idea of comfort while also giving a sporty and athletic feel.
On the technological front, the Zontes E125 is equipped with a compact liquid-cooled 125cc single-cylinder engine with a four-valve cylinder head. With this, the scooter produces 14.6 hp of power – the limit when it comes to A1 licensing parameters. For reliable performance, it uses the Bosch MSE 8.0 electronic fuel injection system. The rider is kept up to date with all relevant driving statistics through a full-color TFT display with four modes and a “Screen Mirroring” function. There is also a convenient tire pressure monitoring system and an ambient temperature reading on the instrument panel.
In terms of foundations, the E125 is quite basic in its construction, with a standard telescopic front fork and a set of dual rear shock absorbers with adjustable preload to accommodate riding with a passenger or extra load. The E125 is equipped with front and rear disc brakes with two-channel ABS for added safety. Meanwhile, up front, a six-focal LED headlight illuminates the road ahead and an integrated DRL ensures our visibility to other road users. Other standard features include electronically adjustable windscreen and handguards for added wind and fall protection.
When it comes to price and availability, the Zontes E125 is expected to start rolling out of showrooms in Spain at the end of January 2024.
