KTM is set to unveil several novelties in the coming weeks, with the first being an automated manual transmission (AMT) launching tomorrow. This technology is becoming increasingly popular among manufacturers.
Initially patented in 2023, this transmission is designed for V2 engines, with the patent sketches indicating it will be used with the 1,301cc LC8-V2 engine. Earlier this year, it was tested on the KTM 1390 Super Adventure R during the Erzbergrodeo event without any issues. Given the engine type shown, it is expected that the automated transmission will be featured on models like the new 1390 Super Duke GT and 1390 Super Adventure.
The Mattighofen-based manufacturer patented a gear lock system for transmissions with a centrifugal clutch, with the Rekluse clutch design being cited as ideal for this solution. In essence, when the bike is parked with a gear engaged, the rear wheel would not encounter any obstruction from the transmission – relying solely on a parking brake. KTM’s system is an electronically controlled transmission lock that eliminates the need for a separate parking brake.
The rider will be able to control the automatic transmission via a button, and with the Rekluse clutch, there will be no need for a clutch lever, although a foot control may be available to allow the rider to override the automatic transmission if desired.
Additionally, Bosch introduced six new driving assistance features supported by radar in September, which also influence the behavior of KTM’s automatic transmission in various ways.
